Understanding Substance Use Treatment

Substance use disorders can affect adolescents and adults and may range from mild experimentation or misuse to more severe patterns of dependence that significantly impact health, relationships, school, work, and daily functioning.

Treatment recommendations vary based on the individual's age, severity of substance use, safety concerns, mental health needs, and previous treatment history.

Because treatment programs are often separated by age group and level of care, this directory includes both adolescent and adult treatment resources.

Understanding the Different Levels of Care

Outpatient Substance Use Therapy

Outpatient therapy is typically appropriate for individuals who are medically stable and able to participate in treatment while living at home.

Treatment may focus on:

  • substance use recovery
  • relapse prevention
  • coping skills
  • family support
  • motivation for change
  • management of co-occurring mental health concerns

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

IOP programs provide more support than traditional outpatient treatment while allowing individuals to continue living at home. These programs typically involve multiple treatment sessions each week and may include:

  • individual therapy
  • group therapy
  • family therapy
  • substance use education
  • relapse prevention planning
  • recovery skill development

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP)

PHP programs provide a higher level of care than IOP.

Individuals attend treatment for most of the day several days per week while returning home in the evenings.

These programs often include:

  • daily therapeutic programming
  • psychiatric care
  • group and individual therapy
  • substance use treatment
  • recovery planning
  • medical and behavioral health monitoring

Residential Treatment

Residential treatment provides 24-hour therapeutic support in a structured treatment environment.

This level of care may be recommended when symptoms are severe, safety concerns exist, substance use continues despite previous treatment, or repeated attempts at recovery have not resulted in lasting improvement.

Residential treatment focuses on stabilization, recovery, skill development, relapse prevention, and long-term recovery planning.

How MindWeal Determines the Right Level of Care

MindWeal provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and ongoing psychiatric care for children and adolescents.

When concerns related to substance use are identified, we assess the severity of substance use, safety concerns, impact on daily functioning, co-occurring mental health conditions, motivation for treatment, family support, and previous treatment history.

Based on this assessment, we may recommend additional substance use treatment services, including outpatient therapy, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), or residential treatment programs.

For individuals who require adult services, we may also recommend adult substance use treatment providers and adult psychiatry providers for ongoing treatment and medication management.
