How to Check Orthostatic Blood Pressure at Home
Orthostatic blood pressure checks help us understand how your child’s blood pressure and heart rate change with position. This can be helpful when evaluating symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint.
Please follow the steps below carefully.
Before You Start
- Your child should rest quietly before beginning
- Use an automatic upper-arm blood pressure monitor
- Make sure your child feels steady and safe during position changes
- If your child feels dizzy or unwell at any point, stop the test
Step 1: Lying Down
- Have your child lie flat for 3 minutes
- After 3 minutes, check blood pressure and heart rate
- Write down the numbers

Step 2: Sitting
- Have your child sit upright with legs dangling for 3 minutes
- After 3 minutes, check blood pressure and heart rate
- Write down the numbers

Step 3: Standing
- Have your child stand up slowly and remain standing for 3 minutes
- After 3 minutes, check blood pressure and heart rate
- Write down the numbers

⚠️ If your child feels dizzy, lightheaded, weak, or faint, have them sit or lie down immediately and stop the test.
