What Are Autism-Related Services?

Autism-related services help children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) develop skills in communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily functioning.

These services are typically provided by specialized therapy centers that work with children through structured programs designed to build developmental skills and improve independence.

The type of therapy recommended depends on the child’s specific strengths and challenges.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA Therapy)

One of the most common therapies for children with autism is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). ABA therapy focuses on helping children:

  • develop communication skills
  • improve attention and learning
  • strengthen social interaction
  • reduce challenging behaviors
  • build daily living skills

ABA therapy uses structured teaching strategies and positive reinforcement to help children learn new skills step by step.

Many ABA programs offer in-home therapy, clinic-based therapy, or a combination of both.

Other Therapies That May Help Children With Autism

In addition to ABA therapy, many autism service providers offer other specialized supports. These may include:

Social Skills Training
Helps children learn how to interact with peers, understand social cues, and build relationships.

Parent Training and Education
Teaches parents strategies to support behavior management and skill development at home.

Behavior Intervention Planning
Structured programs designed to reduce challenging behaviors and promote positive behaviors.

Life Skills Training
Focuses on independence skills such as daily routines, self-care, and adaptive functioning.

Feeding Therapy
Some programs address feeding challenges using behavioral strategies to support healthy eating and oral-motor skills.

Toileting / Potty Training Programs
ABA-based programs that help children learn toileting skills.

School Readiness Programs
Programs designed to help children build the developmental and behavioral skills needed for classroom success.

Therapeutic or Alternative Education Programs
Some centers offer specialized school programs designed for children who benefit from structured behavioral support during the school day.

Not every clinic provides all of these services. The services available will vary depending on the provider.

Related Therapy Services

Children with autism often benefit from additional therapies such as speech and language therapy and occupational therapy, which support communication, sensory processing, and daily functioning.

Some providers listed on this page may also offer these services, and when available they are included in the Services Provided column. However, these services may not always be fully listed here.

If you find a provider on this page that you prefer for ABA or other autism-related services, but speech or occupational therapy are not listed, you may want to check our other referral pages to see whether the same provider appears there and offers those services.
