What Are IOP and PHP Programs?
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) are higher levels of mental health treatment designed for children and adolescents who need more support than traditional weekly therapy or psychiatry visits.
These programs provide structured treatment several days per week while allowing the child to continue living at home.
They are often used when symptoms have become severe enough to significantly interfere with daily functioning, school attendance, family life, or safety.
What Is the Difference Between IOP and PHP?
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
PHP is the more intensive option.
Children typically attend treatment 5 days per week for several hours each day.
A PHP often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or as a step-down level of care after a psychiatric hospitalization.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
IOP is less intensive than PHP but provides more support than traditional outpatient care.
Children typically attend treatment 2–5 days per week for several hours per session.
IOP is often recommended when a child needs structured treatment but does not require the intensity of a PHP.
What Happens in an IOP or PHP?
Programs vary by provider, but treatment commonly includes:
- individual therapy
- group therapy
- family therapy
- coping skills training
- emotional regulation skills
- crisis management and safety planning
- psychiatric medication management
- school support and coordination
Programs are designed to help children stabilize symptoms, develop coping skills, improve functioning, and avoid hospitalization whenever possible.
When MindWeal Refers for IOP or PHP
MindWeal provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and ongoing psychiatric care for children and adolescents.
When symptoms become severe or are not adequately improving with outpatient treatment alone, we may recommend a higher level of care such as an IOP or PHP.
Common reasons for referral include:
- severe anxiety
- severe depression
- frequent emotional crises
- self-harm behaviors
- suicidal thoughts
- school refusal
- significant behavioral dysregulation
- worsening symptoms despite outpatient treatment
- recent psychiatric hospitalization
- need for more intensive therapy and support
The goal is to provide a level of care that matches the child's current needs and helps them achieve stabilization as quickly and safely as possible.
When Should Families Consider IOP or PHP?
Families may benefit from discussing IOP or PHP when:
- weekly therapy does not seem sufficient
- symptoms are worsening despite treatment
- the child is struggling to function at school or home
- safety concerns are increasing
- a recent crisis or hospitalization has occurred
- additional structure and support are needed
Early intervention can often help prevent symptoms from becoming more severe and may reduce the need for inpatient hospitalization.
