About Neuropsychological Testing Referrals at MindWeal Health

MindWeal provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and treatment for children and adolescents.

In some situations, additional formal cognitive or learning evaluations may be recommended to better understand a child’s learning profile, intellectual abilities, memory, or other cognitive skills.

These evaluations are typically performed by neuropsychologists or psychologists who specialize in psychological testing.

At this time, MindWeal does not provide in-house neuropsychological or psychoeducational testing. Instead, we collaborate with trusted community-based testing providers.

To help families access these services, we maintain curated referral lists organized by region.

Understanding Different Types of Testing

Families may hear different terms when searching for testing services. The two most common types of evaluations are neuropsychological testing and psychoeducational evaluations.

Neuropsychological Testing

Neuropsychological testing is the most comprehensive type of cognitive evaluation. These evaluations are conducted by neuropsychologists and assess how different areas of the brain process information.

A neuropsychological evaluation may examine:

• Intellectual abilities (IQ)
• Memory and learning
• Attention and processing speed
• Language skills
• Visual-spatial skills
• Problem-solving and reasoning
• Emotional and behavioral functioning

These evaluations are often recommended when there are complex learning, developmental, or cognitive concerns, or when multiple factors may be affecting a child’s functioning.

Psychoeducational Evaluations

Psychoeducational evaluations are commonly performed to understand academic learning difficulties and school performance.

These evaluations typically include:

• Intellectual ability (IQ) testing
• Academic achievement testing (reading, writing, math)
• Evaluation for learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia

These evaluations are frequently used to support school accommodations, such as IEP or 504 plans.

How Neuropsychological Testing and Psychoeducational Evaluations Differ

Both evaluations may include IQ testing, but their focus is different.

Neuropsychological testing looks broadly at how the brain processes information across multiple domains.

Psychoeducational evaluations focus more specifically on how a child’s cognitive abilities relate to academic performance and learning difficulties.

In some cases, providers may perform a combined evaluation depending on the referral question.

Before You Call a Testing Provider (Important)

Before scheduling testing, please keep the following in mind:

  • A psychiatric or clinical evaluation has already been completed by MindWeal
  • You are seeking additional cognitive or learning testing to support diagnostic clarity or educational planning
  • A referral is typically not required to schedule testing
  • Families must contact testing providers directly to inquire about services and availability

What to Ask When You Call

When contacting a neuropsychology or testing practice, we recommend asking:

  • “Do you offer comprehensive neuropsychological testing for children or adolescents?”
  • “Do you provide psychoeducational evaluations for learning disabilities?”
  • “What types of concerns do your evaluations assess?”
  • “Do you offer IQ and academic achievement testing?”

Please also let them know:

  • Your child has already completed a clinical evaluation with MindWeal
  • You are seeking testing only, not ongoing psychiatric care

Sharing Records With the Testing Provider

To support continuity of care:

  • Please complete and sign MindWeal’s Release of Information (ROI) form
  • Ask that relevant clinical notes from the past year be shared with the testing provider

Sharing records helps testing providers tailor evaluations and avoid unnecessary duplication.

Helpful Reminders

  • Neuropsychological and psychoeducational testing waitlists can be long
  • Availability, scope of testing, and insurance acceptance vary by provider
  • Families are encouraged to contact more than one provider to explore timelines and fit
